Installation

Getting NotchHub up and running takes less than a minute.

Download & Install

    Download NotchHub

    Click the download button on our homepage or download directly here.

    Open the DMG file

    Double-click the downloaded NotchHub.dmg file to mount it.

    Drag to Applications

    Drag the NotchHub icon to your Applications folder.

    Launch NotchHub

    Open NotchHub from your Applications folder or Spotlight (⌘ + Space, type "NotchHub").

    Grant Permissions

    Follow the prompts to grant necessary permissions. See the Permissions section for details.

Tip: To have NotchHub start automatically when you log in, enable "Launch at Login" in the app's settings.

Updating NotchHub

NotchHub checks for updates automatically. When an update is available:

  • You'll see a notification in your Dynamic Island
  • Click the notification or go to Settings → Updates
  • Click "Download & Install"

You can also manually check for updates in Settings → About → Check for Updates.

Uninstalling

To uninstall NotchHub:

  1. Quit NotchHub (right-click menu bar icon → Quit)
  2. Drag NotchHub from Applications to Trash
  3. Optionally, remove preferences: ~/Library/Preferences/app.notchhub.NotchHub.plist

Quick Start

Here's a 2-minute guide to get you up and running with the core features.

Your First Live Activity

Once NotchHub is running, try playing some music in Apple Music or Spotify. You'll see the currently playing track appear in your notch with album artwork and playback controls.

Access Settings

Click the NotchHub icon in your menu bar to access settings and preferences.

Menu Bar → NotchHub Icon → Settings...

Macs without Notch:

NotchHub also works on Macs without a notch! It displays as a floating "island" at the top center of your screen. Compatible with:

  • MacBook Air M1 (2020)
  • MacBook Pro 13" (2020+)
  • iMac (2020+)
  • Mac Mini / Mac Studio / Mac Pro (with external display)

Note: macOS 13 Ventura and earlier are not supported. NotchHub requires APIs introduced in macOS 14 Sonoma.

Permissions

NotchHub requires certain macOS permissions to function properly. Here's what each permission does and why it's needed.

Notifications

Required

Why: To display system notifications in your Dynamic Island.

How to enable:

System Settings → Notifications → NotchHub → Allow Notifications

Accessibility

Required

Why: For gesture detection and positioning the island correctly.

How to enable:

System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility → Enable NotchHub

NotchHub never reads your screen content or keystrokes. This permission is only used for gesture detection and window positioning.

Media & Apple Music

Optional

Why: To display currently playing media information.

How to enable:

System Settings → Privacy & Security → Media & Apple Music → Enable NotchHub

Optional

Why: To show upcoming calendar events in widgets.

How to enable:

System Settings → Privacy & Security → Calendars → Enable NotchHub

Live Activities

Live Activities are real-time updates that appear in your Dynamic Island. They provide glanceable information without interrupting your workflow.

Configuring Live Activities

You can enable or disable specific Live Activities in Settings:

Settings → Live Activities → Toggle individual activities

Priority Order

When multiple activities are active, NotchHub shows them in priority order:

  1. Phone Calls (highest priority)
  2. Timers (when less than 1 minute remaining)
  3. Active Downloads
  4. Music (lowest priority, always available)

You can customize this order in Settings → Live Activities → Priority.

Control your music without switching apps. NotchHub integrates with all major media players.

Gesture Controls

Expanded View

Long-press on the music activity to expand it. The expanded view shows:

  • Full album artwork
  • Track progress bar (draggable)
  • Shuffle & repeat controls
  • Like/dislike buttons (Spotify)
  • AirPlay device selector

Keyboard Shortcuts

Power users can control NotchHub entirely with keyboard shortcuts.

Global Shortcuts

These work from any app:

+ + T Start/stop timer

Customizing Shortcuts

All shortcuts can be customized:

Troubleshooting

Having issues? Here are solutions to common problems.

NotchHub doesn't appear after launching

  1. Check if NotchHub is running (look for icon in menu bar)
  2. Ensure Accessibility permission is granted
  3. Try quitting and relaunching the app
  4. Restart your Mac if the issue persists

Music controls not working

  1. Ensure "Media & Apple Music" permission is granted
  2. Check that your music app is actually playing
  3. Try restarting the music app
  4. Some apps (like web players) may have limited support

Notifications not showing in island

  1. Check System Settings → Notifications → NotchHub
  2. Ensure "Allow Notifications" is enabled
  3. Check that the specific app's notifications are enabled
  4. Verify NotchHub notification settings aren't filtering them out

High CPU usage

NotchHub should use <1% CPU. If you see higher usage:

  1. Check for conflicting apps (other notch utilities)
  2. Disable unused widgets and integrations
  3. Update to the latest version
  4. If issue persists, please contact support with Activity Monitor screenshot

Island appears in wrong position

  1. Go to Settings → Appearance → Reset Position
  2. If using multiple displays, check Settings → Displays
  3. Try toggling "Auto-position" off and on

Reset to Defaults

If all else fails, you can reset NotchHub to factory settings:

Settings → Advanced → Reset All Settings

Or manually delete preferences:

rm ~/Library/Preferences/app.notchhub.NotchHub.plist
